I liked this episode very much. Flanagan was a fine character actress and highly acclaimed in her native Ireland. I remember her from her small roles in 1960s and 1970s TV series of all kinds. She always delivered. The interplay between Spiner and Flanagan's characters was quite touching. Whatever the shortcomings of the science itself in this episode, it was quite prescient. A few of the tech billionaires today are trying to do exactly what Soong did with Juliana, i.e., transfer a person's mind and essence into an artificial construct. In any event, I am sorry that you did not enjoy this episode as much as I did.

Awesome to hear from someone who is a fan of this episode! I do wonder whether having previously enjoyed Flanagan in other shows gives this one a leg up, as it's something I've noticed coming up among the fans who support this one (they mention they've always liked her as an actress). I know there are episodes for me that get an assist from casting folks I already encountered too (like "Conundrum").

As for the wealthy's quest for immortality - it in no way begins with the idea of 'uploading' yourself! Walt Disney's frozen head is an obvious forerunner (and that topic - cryogenics - led to the classic Trek episode "Space Seed!", and TNG's "The Neutral Zone"). 🙂

Many thanks for commenting, Arline!

I must draw your attention to the current efforts by billionaires, such as Russia's nickel king Dmitri Itskov, who are investing in research to extend human life or achieve immortality. In fact, Itskov founded the "2045 Initiative," which aims for cybernetic immortality by 2045. So once again Star Trek is prescient and decades ahead of its time. That is even more reason to appreciate this episode, even if Flanagan were not a part of it. Once again, I am sorry that you did not enjoy this episode as much as I did. Best regards.

Folks always seek the Holy Grail and the Philosopher's Stone. The technologic versions around today don't strike me as any less far fetched. 😁

And no need to feel sorry that I didn't like an episode you did! I mean, it's certainly not your responsibility. 😂 Personally, I LOVE that we have these different aesthetic responses to episodes - it keeps it interesting! How dull it would be if we only ever liked the same things...

All the best!

Chris.
