This is a great episode. I often wonder how much the actors influence what happens during filming. I mean, they're not writers, but are they are the ones that bring the characters to life... It certainly would not have had as much impact if Picard had only said a single word!
The performers can have quite an impact in adjusting scripts, but it often comes down to how well positioned they are in the production. Patrick Stewart had much more influence, for instance, than Marina Sirtis...
She knew she had a plumb job, and wasn't about to give it up. And the good news is, they do eventually start making better use of her in the later seasons.

Poor Marina Sirtis was never given anything to work with in the first place! She must have been a tough cookie to have stuck it out...
