Really? The writer didn't know how to end it? You can't tell at all but then again we all knew it would turn out nice again somehow so I guess it didn't really matter.
It was the most surprising thing as I was writing this one, as you'd think there was half a plan at least - but no! Of course, as you say, since you know you have to write them out of it, to some extent you can take your chances. This is probably why the setup episodes of two-parters are usually the better ones, though. 🙂
