This is a great episode (I feel like I say that a lot). Barclay is great and I wish we got to see more of him throughout the later seasons. I like how his powers develop through the episode and how it’s hinted he retained some tiny sliver of intelligence when he plays out the game of 4D chess at the end.
Really insightful about the laser effects. To a layman (me) it seemed like shining lights down on his head was just a normal thing to do.
One of the reasons that TNG is such a landmark sci-fi show is that there are a LOT of great episodes! Much as I love, say, Space 1999 or Stargate SG-1, they don't have a great many episodes that really stand out as exceptional. TNG does. It's why it was an easy choice for me to pick TNG for this project!
As for the lasers - if you're like me, coming back to watch TNG many times, it becomes easy to forget how many times they were breaking new ground with techniques that soon after become commonplace. That they were also really good at executing older techniques, like matte paintings, makes this show a great one for an SFX fan like me to open the black box and poke around 'behind the scenes'.
