Nice write-up - this is a favorite ep of mine, as you said, music is prime ingredient. Also, I love how Tam puts Riker in his place. Must be the sadist in me - I just love seeing Riker get trounced by guest stars - lol. But that music... never fails to move me - just love it. Gomtuu FX ripple - isn't it a reuse/recycle of that sequence from The Motion Picture - end V'Ger going to another plane of existence brilliance? Always felt familiar to me...
So I looked into this and you're absolutely correct - that sequence is directly transplanted from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. There's is also footage taken from "When the Bough Breaks" (the Enterprise is thrown away) and "The Naked Now" (the sun goes supernova). Nice catch!
